Customized Contemporary Sofas, Loveseats and Chairs by Comfy 1 (formerly Creative Comfort Co.)

The owner of Comfy 1, Don Meulenberg, reluctantly announces suspension of accepting new orders for furniture, to be effective at least until February of 2024. Warranties will continue to be honored on furniture that we have sold.

For several years I have been doing health-related research and writing, along with Comfy 1 work, and it has been tiring doing both. I have become convinced that I can make a much greater contribution by concentrating, for now, on the health-related research and writing. Anyone who is curious about the nature of that pursuit, and especially anyone who knows parents who might be breastfeeding their infants or planning to do so, is encouraged to visit www.pollutionaction.org.

I hope that I will have completed enough of the time-consuming Pollution Action projects by 2024 so that I can resume accepting a few orders for Comfy 1 furniture, but that is hard to predict. However, there will be a transition from the former setup -- one of a small factory producing in a semi-mass-production mode -- to a much-smaller-scale operation consisting of only one or two people working part-time, making one or two products at a time. (The former arrangement didn't work out financially in recent years, with prices of Chinese imports forming the picture of what most people are willing to pay.) So costs will inevitably be higher, and prices will be about 70% higher than the prices shown on the pages of this website. (25%-35% higher for replacement cushions) Also, when I resume, I will avoid something that was often a headache in the past, which is staining the wood (achieving the uniformity and grain-matching that many customers expect was the problem). Painted finish (any color) or unfinished will be the only options.

It is likely that there will be more prospective customers than I am able to accommodate, so (except for cushion-only orders) my first preference will be customers who are either

a) within a 3-hour drive from the town of Shenandoah, VA, which is about 2 hours west-south-west of the Washington beltway.  (I prefer to drive to deliver rather than spending a lot of time doing fussy packing for shipment.) 

b) able to pick up their orders here in Shenandoah. Our sofas can be disassembled to fit inside many average-size cars, although the backs of the Custom 05 model sofas may be too bulky for an average car.

We make sofas, loveseats, chairs and custom sectional couches that are comfortable, durable, space-saving, and almost always a perfect fit for your room. All models are available with our full range of custom sizes, heights, lengths, less-deep dimensions, and outstanding selection of beautiful, durable fabrics, hundreds of which are also stain resistant and liquid repellant.

Every upholstered or wood sofa, loveseat or chair has the simplicity of design of contemporary style; however, especially with darker wood colors and our unlimited fabric selection, these sofas and chairs can also blend well with traditional or other decors.

Non-bulky sofas & chairs made to fit
Our loveseats, chairs and sofas are non-bulky, compact and well suited for small and medium-sized spaces (unless you choose our large-scaled options). We make every design in your choice of many lengths, and our standard frame depth is only about 33" (30" deep is an option). This narrower-than-average, relatively small-scale sofa depth is still comfortable for most tall people (as well as for shorter people).

All of our furniture is made in America, which is increasingly uncommon; and that is only one of many features that contribute to the eco-friendly nature of our products compared with furniture that is imported (along with shipping pollution) from the other side of the world.

Wood-Frame Sofa and Chair Models:

Ease of re-covering, combined with extra-sturdy, solid-hardwood structure, means that this furniture is especially renewable, sustainable, very cleanable (with hundreds of our fabrics), and economical in the long run. Each couch, loveseat or chair is made to order in your choice of thousands of fabrics (or provide your own), and many optional and custom dimensions are available. Also, every wood sofa or chair can be ordered in your choice of many wood stains that produce a mild grain effect. The structurally important parts of the exposed wood as well as the interior structure of every sofa are solid oak wood.

The "padded arm wrap" that you see on the left is (1) optional, (2) removable, and (3) easy to re-cover. It is available on any exposed-wood model except the Virginia model. Note that it can be positioned either to completely cover the wood arm top or else to leave enough of the wood exposed at the front to provide a secure hand grip on the wood. (see below, right)

Our furniture is especially well suited for sunrooms or sunny rooms, since most of our designs are more open and airy and less bulky than typical furniture. The fact that we can make these sofas, loveseats and chairs in a very wide range of different sizes helps assure that the best use can be made of the often-limited space in sun rooms. We have an excellent selection of sun-resistant fabrics, and even if you choose a fabric that isn't especially sun-resistant, ease of replacing the covers can be very helpful in dealing with sun damage. We also make matching ottomans, fully upholstered as well as with exposed-wood legs, and matching coffee tables and end tables, in many standard sizes as well as in custom sizes.

Any of the above wood stains, plus three others, are available on any sofa, loveseat or chair model or matching table or ottoman. Our stains are carefully applied and provide better-than-average (but still imperfect) uniformity of color. And the exposed wood surfaces will be free of dark streaks and noticeable defects. The wood grain as shown on our furniture is milder than is typically seen on oak, but still very visible. We also can paint the wood any color to order, using thinned enamel (allowing good penetration as well as some visibility of the texture of the oak grain), with two coats of polyurethane on top of the enamel. Long-term economy resulting from outstanding durability and renewability: This results from nearly-indestructible construction combined with ease of replacing covers and cushions. Neatly-fitting replacement covers for one of our three-seat exposed-wood sofas (sorry, they don't fit other companies' sofas) are $210-$248, complete, in one of our base-priced fabrics, or in a range between those prices and up to $400 in a huge selection of fabrics (obviously, some fabrics are higher). If you know how much it costs to re-cover or reupholster ordinary sofas, and how often that would be needed in many cases, you can appreciate the long-term savings with this furniture. Replacement covers for our fully-upholstered sofa models would be higher than for our wooden-frame sofas, but still far less than neatly-fitting covers would cost for typical furniture. After 28 years with this earlier version of our California model (on the right), our Massachusetts customers purchased replacement cushions. Their updated fabric, a microsuede, was a perfect complement to their surrounding decor, which is easy to achieve with our huge fabric selection. Providing great-looking replacement covers and cushions to our earlier customers after 25 to 30 years or more, to go on frames that are still essentially like new, is not at all unusual for us.

If you like to keep up with evolving color preferences, or to modify your decor to create a fresh look once in a while, or to express yourself artistically in your decor, keep in mind that with our furniture you can change the covers at very moderate expense.

And, with our huge fabric selection, you'll almost certainly be able to find just the right patterns and colors to go with the other elements of your decor. Several of our customers have mentioned that we offer an unusually great selection of beautiful fabrics, in contrast with the relatively meager selections that they had previously found while looking extensively for furniture in a major metropolitan area. All of our cushions are zippered, the arm treatments are similarly easy to re-cover (including by way of hook-and-loop fastenings), and all cushions can be turned and rotated to maximize presentable, useful life.

Our "Pet-Safer Sofa"(R) has features that make it especially pet friendly, as shown here, including (1) an exposed-oak frame in our Florida model (although similar practicality would also be available in our California or New Jersey models, at higher prices) and (2) no padded arm wraps (although people sometimes order the padded arm wraps and just remove them at times when the pets might damage them). If the furniture could be located away from a wall, people also usually order (3) the all-wood back option. And customers typically also order a fabric that's smooth if they have cats, or possibly one that's especially stain resistant and durable (such as the Crypton (R) fabric shown here) if they have dogs.

Our sofas, loveseats and chairs are suitable for almost any hard use, while still being inviting, comfortable, and good looking. Solid oak where strength is important: Our sofas, loveseats, chairs, and ottomans are solid oak at all structurally-important places:  all corner posts, the complete front rails, and all of the wood in the backs of the frames if the customer chooses the standard fabric-covered or faux-leather-covered back of the frame; for all-wood backs, the top section (3” high x 1 1/2” thick) is solid, and the corner blocks and supporting members at the inside bottom are solid, but the large (16”-high) main panels are 3/4” oak-veneer plywood.  Similarly, on the Florida and California sides, the flat panels that fill in the space between the front and back posts are oak veneer plywood.  Everything else that is exposed or structurally important (including all exposed wood on the Virginia-model sides) is solid oak.

When looking at competing furniture in stores and online, you should be aware that most upholstered furniture you'll find these days is made in China, even though that will not be openly acknowledged. There are good reasons why they don't want to admit it, and good reasons why you should know about it. The furniture manufacturer that describes itself as the biggest-selling brand in North America (Ashley) has most of its furniture made in China, although they are not forthcoming about that fact. If you go into a store selling inexpensive (but nice-looking) sofas, and ask a knowledgeable person who is not on his guard, he or she might acknowledge that it's made in China. For why you should want to know this fact, read on:

American manufacturers, including Comfy 1, are subject to laws and regulations that protect the environment and promote consumer safety and worker welfare, while also adding substantially to costs of American-made goods. And there are tremendous costs of imports that are not being paid by importers or their customers, in the form ot tens of thousands of deaths per year resulting from shipping pollution (for information on this, click here). Additional major costs are merely being passed on to future generations: These are the costs to the environment and to the future of the world caused by excessive use of petroleum and by carbon emissions and other pollution resulting from shipping bulky sofas half-way around the world to the U.S. Also, if you buy a sofa made on the other side of the world, think what kind of service you'll be able to get on it if there's a problem after you've paid for it.

A sample seat is available that we can send to you to try sitting on, if it isn't convenient for you to come to our showroom, and if it's important to you to test how our furniture feels to sit on. The customer pays $40 toward the cost of shipping it to them in the Eastern and Central time zones, or $80 in the Mountain and Western time zones, which will be credited toward the cost of an order; and we pay for the return shipment. It would normally come by Fedex ground. It will feel the same to sit on as our regular sofas and chairs with the wood base below the seat, although it won't look normal. And we can include some riser blocks to raise it up, and/or a sample of a firmer seat ($30 additional shipping charge to send a second seat cushion), so you can feel what it would be like if we made a sofa higher or firmer than standard. -- 1) Inquire at the Better Business Bureau where the company is located. From 1998 to 2003 we were within the area of the BBB of Eastern Tennessee. Since then we have been within the area of the BBB of Central Virginia. They won't have any information to report about us because (a) there have been no complaints about us, and (b) we haven't seen fit to pay their expensive dues in order to get them to create an actual report about us (they said they would give us their highest rating if we would just send them a check for $400 every year);
-- 2) Check for warnings from dissatisfied parties (and sometimes kudos) that can often be found by doing a web search using (for your search terms) the company's name followed by "furniture," then bypass the websites issued by that company. There are also websites to which you can go directly to find records of complaints. Admittedly, while telling you this we are aware of only one unfavorable comment about us (on Yelp.com, from an elderly man who had unreasonably high expectations about appearances over the long term in parts of our furniture that are not exposed to normal view -- see our response to his complaint); we're very confident that we will keep such an essentially perfect record.

In addition to those who order by phone or e-mail, with moderate delivery or shipping charges to anywhere in the U.S., customers are welcome (by appointment) to come to our showroom at our combined workshop and sales location in the town of Shenandoah, Virginia, about 30 minutes east of I-81 and Harrisonburg, Virginia and 30 minutes south of Luray (and the famous Luray Caverns), in Virginia. Please don't come without first calling.
