Comfy1's Maryland Model, continued: Arts & Crafts or Mission Sofas, Loveseats and Chairs

If the furnishings around your sofa already include a sufficient amount of conspicuous pattern, we offer not only a wide range of solids and tweeds but also a good selection of fabrics with subdued patterns, such as this one in a central New Jersey home.

The suburban Washington, D.C. customers who bought this set were especially influenced by the fact that we offer comfortable chairs that are considerably less bulky than normal chairs found in stores. The fabric is an extremely practical (but rather expensive) faux suede from Duralee, and the wood finish is our Medium Fruitwood. The loveseat is our largest loveseat size (64", becoming 68" with the optional padded arm wraps), and the chairs are our 28" widths, becoming 32" with the padded arm wraps.

For sunny rooms, in which degrading of the fabric with extensive exposure to sunlight is a problem, exposed wood for the frames and easy-to-recover cushioning are very valuable features. Avoiding reds, blues, and dark colors as well as cotton fabrics are other helpful things to do.

If your decor takes inspiration from the Arts and Crafts period, from Shaker, Mission or Southwestern styles, or if you merely prefer simplicity, timeless design and lasting solidity rather than following the latest passing trends, this furniture is for you.

The Virginia customers who placed this order, in addition to their obvious interest in design and aesthetics, also had very practical considerations in mind. They ordered loveseats in the 52" size together with the 76" sofa length, because those particular lengths all have the same cushion sizes, 24" wide. Realizing that the direct sunlight could cause fading on the sofa covers, they wanted to be able to rotate cushions between the different pieces in order to distribute the exposure evenly. (Rotation and turning of cushions is also recommended in general, to distribute wear evenly and to prevent deforming of the foam filling. You can always rotate cushions within an individual loveseat or sofa, and you can turn every one of our cushions over, or around in the case of back cushions. But ordering a set with the same cushion width expands your range of rotation. All of our sofa and loveseat sizes, three of our chair sizes, and most of our sectional cushions are made with one of the following cushion widths: 24", 27", or 30".)

The pictures above and to the right show frames with our dark walnut finish. With this dark color, the wood grain is not picked up by our amateur photography except in a close-up, but it is very visible to the naked eye. Also in both of the above cases, our customers found their fabrics in one of the Robert Allen books in our showroom; but that company's samples can also be seen in many fabric stores or on their web site, which is referred to in the fabric section of this web site, with samples available on request.

Our Oak Ridge, Tennessee customers, just after receiving delivery of the sofa at the right, wondered aloud why people would buy typical, disposable sofas if they could buy furniture like this. Good question.

These products will usually be less expensive than ordinary furniture in the long run, especially if they are given heavy use, because they don't wear out like typical furniture. With solid oak at locations where ordinary sofas usually wear out first, and with our wide selection of heavy-duty fabrics, our furniture will usually look good long after ordinary furniture has become shabby. When our furniture eventually needs new covers or cushions, replacing them is relatively easy and inexpensive. Very extensive customization and hand craftsmanship also add greatly to long-term value. Pricing of the Maryland models: The Maryland model is one of our two most expensive designs, partly because it uses more solid oak than the other models, and partly because of all the skilled workmanship required to make the joints fit tightly and flush. Also, concern for permanence of the flushness dictates that we individually check the pieces of wood used in these sides for precise moisture content. (Even with that, we discourage placing this model in extremely dry or extremely humid climates, or with a side/arm located within three feet of a source of concentrated heat (baseboard heating is normally OK).

(Keep in mind that the overall length would increase by 4" if you choose the optional padded arm wraps):
Base prices (10% discounts are available: see below.):
Sofas: 76" - $3280; 85" - $3490; 94" - $3740. (The distance between the arms is only 4" less than the above measurements, if no arm padding is in place, or about 8" less with the arm padding.)
Loveseats: 52" long - $2835; 58" - $2945; 64" - $3075.
Chairs: 28" wide - $2120; 31" wide - $2200; 34" - $2290; 40" - $2490.
These prices include 10 to 15 base-priced fabrics, a fabric-covered back of the frame, either a padded arm top or a finished oak arm top, the 31" back height (measured floor to top, shown in almost all of the pictures above), the 33" frame depth, and any of our standard wood finishes. If you want both a finished wood arm top and the padded arm wrap on top of that, add $50.

There is a huge selection of high-quality fabrics available within $175 above the base price for a sofa, or within $125 above the base price for a loveseat. When we send you samples, we will indicate pricing information for those. If you provide your own fabric, the price would be reduced by $40, $30, or $20 for a sofa, loveseat, or chair.
The 2"-higher back adds $2 per inch, a 4"-higher back adds $4 per inch, and a 6"-higher back adds. $6 per inch.
A webbing suspension, for softer support, adds $1 per inch. (For detailed information about our standard and optional heights, cushion types (including "puffy"), firmnesses, seating dimensions and frame depths, with information about price effects of the various options, click here ).
An all-wood back adds $2 per inch of length. Note: If you want the added practicality of an all-wood back but don't like the additional cost, keep in mind that we offer a matching leather-imitation vinyl-covered back at no surcharge; the faux leathers these days are often hard to distinguish from real leather.
Toss pillows or arm pillows are $40 per pair, plus $0 - $20 or so for fabric.
Non-standard dimensions: Special lengths: Add $90 to the price of the next longer length, or (for extra-long) add $350 plus $16 per inch to the longest standard size. For a 30" frame depth, or a 36" frame depth, or for having the entire frame made higher or lower, click here. .

Delivery in the D.C. beltway-Charlottesville-Richmond-Annapolis area would add $65 to $110, packing and shipping to the U.S. west coast would add 18% of the base price, and delivery or shipping to other locations in the contiguous 48 U.S. states and southeastern Canada would be somewhere in between depending on distance from north-central Virginia. We do not presently charge sales tax on orders shipped via common carrier to points outside Virginia (although legislation is pending that could, at any time, require us to collect other states' sales taxes).

Discounts /completion times: Our standard completion time, for orders at the list price, is five to six weeks.* If you can wait as much as six months, we deduct 10% off the base price of the furniture. But, to repeat, our standard completion time is five to six weeks. Since our sales levels fluctuate considerably and unpredictably, we offer discounts to customers who don't expect their furniture soon. This provides a backlog of orders to keep our people working during lulls in sales levels; and it allows easier handling of the full-price orders when we have a surge of them.

*Our "normal" completion time is subject to change if we receive a surge of orders, which can happen at any time (but we would make that clear when an order is placed); this tends to happen especially in the last months of the year. If you can plan farther in advance of when you really need the furniture, it's better.
